General Notes for All Travellers
Book trains early. Varanasi is one of India's most visited pilgrimage and tourist destinations. AC-class train berths on well-rated trains sell out 4–8 weeks ahead during the October–March peak season. Book on IRCTC (irctc.co.in) as soon as your dates are confirmed.
Varanasi Junction (BSB) is the main arrival station, located in the heart of the city. Some trains terminate at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU), approximately 18 km away — verify your train's terminus when booking.
Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS) is 26 km from the city centre. Pre-paid taxis and app-based cabs (Ola, Uber) serve the airport. Journey to the ghats takes 45–90 minutes.
The old city is pedestrian-only beyond Godaulia and Assi Crossing junctions. All vehicles stop at these points and the ghats are reached on foot. Plan your accommodation accordingly.
